Description
With the oligarchy and religion of Phanes being military-oriented, the establishment of a military academy for training recruits was swift. The primary building used is what used to be Notre Dame Academy, and they frequently use the nearby Enos Colburn Park as a training area. The location sits in the middle of the western Barren side of the city and often acts as a center for military operation on that side.

Sounds of crossbow fire and occasional gunfire can be heard throughout the nearby area of the city from the Academy training grounds. Classrooms are kept at a good standard of organization and cleanliness, often maintained by the trainees themselves. Maintenance of the facility's more advanced equipment is designated to more qualified engineers, however.

The entire military is comprised entirely of Barren because part of their identity is ownership of the military power, hence the name of Barren Legion. Humans are not necessarily banned from working in the military facilities, but it is considered strange, or often even discouraged, for Humans to associate themselves with military activities unless they are government officials who need to work with the military.

Troops endure rigorous physical training to maintain strength, dexterity, and overall fitness and health. They run daily morning, midday, and evening exercises and are only fed the minimum healthy standard of rations. They are also trained mentally with training in weapons design and maintenance, survival skills, and battle tactics. Each soldier is required to construct their own armor as well (following uniform standards of course). Creating their won armor saves time and resources needed for mass production while allowing soldiers to have a sense of ownership of their roles in society. The soldiers are generally trained under the two sections of raiding groups and guarding troops. Raiding troops are trained in the logistics of raiding settlements and determining useful pieces of technology and resources to bring back to the city. Guarding troops are trained for policing the city, bodyguarding important locations and people, and defending the border wall. The final bit of training is nuanced throughout the entirety of their stay at the Academy, which is the psychological indoctrination to condition their cooperation and obedience to the military and oligarchy of the city. Troops are expected to hold the values of the city of the highest importance so that the city doesn't crumble under its lack of formal law, so any kind of dissent or noncompliance must be squelched. This is usually not too bad of an issue, however, since almost all trainees at the academy enroll voluntarily knowing the importance of the military force in the city. Most soldiers are proud to be part of the Barren Legion and are determined to do whatever they can to help the city.
